Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince left us with a truly bleak view of the future: Dumbledore was murdered, the Ministry was as inept as ever, and Harry Potter was left with the insurmountably immense task of righting the most glaring, deathly wrong of the Wizarding world – Voldemort himself.
Compitum begins two months after the point where HBP left off. Although June began with an ominous event that seemed to bode ill for the near future, the rest of the summer passed oddly uneventful. The Death Eaters have been seen nowhere, terrorized nothing, and, perhaps most importantly, killed no one. However, Wizarding society is far from at ease, and the Daily Prophet headlines constantly speak of upcoming attacks and impending doom.
This time, Harry Potter refuses to sit and wait – inactivity does, after all, simply lead to more tragedy. Since the wedding of Fleur Delacour to Bill Weasley, the Trio has been tirelessly researching the four items that are key to Voldemort’s demise: the Horcruxes.
But now, the summer is at last coming to a close, and Harry’s more mundane responsibilities are weighing heavily on his shoulders. Despite the destruction wrought by Voldemort the June previous, Hogwarts is indeed being reopened – this time, under the watchful eye of the Ministry. Minerva McGonagall, the newly appointed Headmistress, has sent out letters to all students requesting them to come resume their schooling – that Hogwarts is, despite any and all evidence to the contrary, still the safest place to be. Along with the letter has come their school supply list, with an unusual new addition: 'Magical Journal (1).'
Under the inescapable eye of Molly Weasley, the Trio has realised there is no way to escape attending Hogwarts – at least, not yet. However, Harry cannot wait long; not only are there Horcruxes to find, but Severus Snape still roams free, and the pages of the Daily Prophet are rife with supposed sightings of Draco Malfoy. Harry believes it is his public duty to rid the world he loves of the man determined to destroy it – but he is also being driven by a far more personal obligation, an innate, ubiquitous desire for revenge.
