NOTES: Oh my lord, I love Jamie. Love playing him. Love love love. I'm not too happy with my first incarnation of him (in hindsight, usually I'm not too pleased with my young and hyperactive male characters), but I got a chance to tackle him again more than a year later.

mutation

Duplication: Upon being struck, body will spontaneously generate a perfect duplicate of himself. Anything the strength of a purposeful slap or stronger will do it; a simple flick to the forehead isn't enough. The dupes are complete genetic copies, and Jamie maintains a minor empathic link with all of them, which means it's quite likely that they'll follow his agenda and won't disagree with his commands. Or won't disagree too often, at least — they still retain some very Jamiesque personality traits, and aren't above arguing with themselves. The death of a dupe would also give him some serious psychic backlash. The dupes can operate independently, and can also be reabsorbed at any time. He's still learning how to create a dupe at will.

Memory: The reabsorption of a dupe will give Jamie its complete memories, experiences, and skills — just like he was the one who did it. It's resulted in a pretty damn good memory, thanks to having to exercise it constantly.

personality

Personality: Jamie is a bundle of energy who, due to circumstances beyond his control, has been forced to treat himself like fragile glass. Living in isolation with his family, it wasn't directly dangerous for him to spawn dupes out of nowhere, but he's still learning self-control and the fact that his power makes him extremely vulnerable to exposure in public. The Madroxes encouraged their son to be careful, despite the fact that he'd love nothing more than to fall out of a treehouse, go rollerblading and skin his knees, or rough-house with a big friendly dog —

But if Jamie Madrox ever fell off the swing as a young child, well. You'd get five boys piled on top of each other, crying. He wasn't exactly an easy mutant to hide, but his family did it.

His real name is James, but it never occurred to him to go by it — even now, meeting strangers for the first time in his life, he hangs on to the affectionate parental nickname of 'Jamie'. He simply didn't think of introducing himself as anything else, and more importantly: why should he? Being called James makes him feel strangely uneasy, as if he's being chastised by the name itself. Because Jamie is, in short, a big goofball. He shies away from making decisions or dealing with Serious Business. He grew up with people who accepted him immediately (because they were either his parents or, well, himself), and as a result, Jamie is strangely confident and relaxed. Nothing much will get under his skin. He's easy-going, and his humour slightly off-beat and sardonic; Jamie will constantly poke fun at himself, because after all, who else was there to mock in the past? He's got a humble outlook on life, and has the solid, down-to-earth nature of a kid who grew up on a farm and never had any appearances or reputation to worry about. He's used to having people around who not only know and read him well, but who are him, and can understand him through and through. As such, he's never had any use for deception. Once you get to know him, Jamie's an open book.

On the other hand, there's also a layer of almost childlike earnestness to the boy. He's not used to spending time with people who aren't himself, and as a result can be slightly awkward around the other kids — remember, he's never had friends not named Jamie, and he doesn't exactly know how to deal with them. So he's resorting to the only thing he knows really, really well: cracking a smile and sticking to the fun and games. The boy occasionally gets perplexed when people don't catch the joke or don't immediately know what he's thinking. "Keep up, why don't you?" He lives life at a cheery, frenetic pace, and might get impatient when people fall off his proverbial train of thought. This is also why he'll like Jubilee so much. She has enough energy for ten Jamies.

He will do anything under the sun to make you laugh. At the end of the day, the boy is mostly harmless, as confrontation is the one thing he'll avoid like the plague — confrontation leads to fighting which leads to being struck, which he can't let happen. This instinct developed early on, as all of his arguments were with himself, and the dupes learnt very quickly that scuffling would only ever make the problem worse. Even now, fisticuffs constantly remain at the very bottom of Jamie's list of options. He'll try to think his way out of a situation before anything else.

And on that note, we ought to mention his biggest interest. Reared on television, Jamie Madrox developed a penchant for noir films and detective flicks. Poirot, Columbo, Matlock, Diagnosis Murder, Magnum… even, god forbid, Murder She Wrote. He found something alluring in this strange world of crime and mysteries where people weren't what they seemed, and savvy hard-boiled detectives had interior monologues with themselves. (He kind of wants to be Columbo when he grows up. No lie.) Actually, the boy's much more introspective than he looks on first glance. He has trouble making decisions, knowing that he can do everything if he were so inclined. He has difficulty advising others for much the same reason. He has issues with responsibility. But he's a good kid, and he hasn't let the philosophical dilemma of his dupes affect him too badly. They're fun. So what?

Reputation: Very, very unserious, almost to the point of seeming forced. Awkward and stilted interactions sometimes. He's still getting used to the other kids, and trying very, very hard to understand this whole empathy thing. (He has difficulties seeing things from other people's point of view sometimes. Deal with it.)

background

Family: Dr. Daniel Madrox, Joan Madrox
History: Parents lived by the Los Alamos Nuclear Research Center in New Mexico. Blah blah mutant powers present from birth, parents took him to their farm in Kansas and raised him there. Sixteen years later, he had some sort of accident around the farm or in the nearest town where he spawned way too many dupes at once. Tabloids noticed or something. Weapon X got wind of it.

Thankfully, Black Air did too. They got in just in time to pluck Jamie out before the Facility could snatch him, and he was promptly moved to their shiny new apartment buildings outside London.
