PLAYED BY: Michelle Branch
PERSONALITY: On the surface level, Lani's just a bratty little teen having a lot of trouble adjusting. Energetic and cheerfully self-absorbed, she had always been a bit of an quirky oddball in middle school, and was actually a fairly level-headed kid before her parents' accident — but the carcrash which took her parents also took her behavioural traits and amplified them. What started off as sporadic irresponsibility spiralled into into a chronic case of Hating Srs Bsns. Eccentricity turned into being a social outcast, especially when her peers just didn't know how to relate to her situation. What was first reported as "a healthy ability to play by herself" turned into "doesn't play well with the other kids". Lani became antisocial, impatient, and quick to anger when others didn't get her — she's not a pack animal, and has actually learnt how to cope and plough on without the approval and acceptance of schoolmates, but at the end of the day, she's still looking for someone who understands her wavelength.
Growing up with no siblings, Lani found her own ways of entertaining herself, which usually meant strange hobbies (see: Elvis Presley photos, a fascination with obese people, and tacky science fiction). She's driven almost entirely on sugar and caffeine, and in many ways, behaves a lot like a five-year-old — she'll run off excess energy for days until she suddenly collapses. In these quiet moments, though, Lani is perfectly capable of finding her own calm zen — despite all her vibrancy, she's still used to living life at a slower pace and in a smaller place. She knows how to shut everyone out and just be with herself for a while, outside world be damned. She's often late for engagements, sauntering and strolling through a life which still seems like it should be set on a relaxed tropical island. She doesn't feel the need to be always always always doing something, either, but when she does, she tries to give it her all.
But Lani is, deep down, very resentful at the sudden and tragic turn her life has made, and has therefore given up all sense of responsibility about it — fate took them away from her, so everything else should be fate's problem from here on out. She's cut loose and trusted others to pick up the slack, her attention drawing inward instead. Consequently, Lani can be stubbornly and rampantly immature at times. She still hates feelings of impotency above all else, and of not being able to control her life — getting whisked off to Florida didn't help that, either. Like other maladjusted youths, she's increasingly taken to lashing out with violence when she's frustrated and doesn't know what else to do. It led to more than a few disciplinary meetings at her old high school, along with a penchant for trouble that's just been slowly simmering since then.
Her new change of surroundings, however, is slowly making her realise that she needs to shape up. She used to like her self-coined role of bizarre outcast, but the loneliness is starting to get to her — Lani needs a friend, stat, because trying to tackle the first year of university, alone, in a new state, still reeling from loss, will send her scarpering if it doesn't work out.
LIKES: Big slobbery dogs. Dancing, especially hula, and she will punch you in the face if you call this stereotypical. Riceballs. Punching people in the face. Elvis Presley and old school rock'n'roll. Monster flicks and B-movies. [http://a
bductionlamp.com/ This lamp]. Surfing and swimming. Dancing. Mochi crunch. Biological science. Taking pictures of fat people on the beach. Dancing. Oddity t-shirts from cafepress and thinkgeek. Her aunt.
DISLIKES: Her aunt. Cats. China porcelain dolls, holy crap they creep her out. Principals and headmasters and authority figures in general. Politics.
HISTORY: A childhood with the Presleys in Hawaii meant having one foot in a different culture and most of her time spent outside; Lani was outdoors constantly, with bare feet in parks and on beaches, playing sports and swimming and surfing and boogieboarding and just about anything else that came her way. A Japanese-Caucasian father and Indonesian mother raised her , but .
, with a Japanese-Caucasian father and an Indonesian mother. Grew up in Hawaii, outdoors all the time (bare feet and warm earth). Sports. Boogieboarding? Surfing? Loveslovesloves food, thank god for her iron metabolism, just burns all of it away. Spam musubi and teriyaki and dim sum and sweetbread and etc. Wanted to be a vet when she was little. The Presley women were particularly close; Lani would watch horror movies with her sister and her mother, and her dad taught her ukelele. He also shipped her off to music camp one time, thinking it was her calling, but it turned out Lani didn't really like the instrument on its lonesome. What was important was getting to spend time with her family.
her sister, who she still remembers as more of a playmate than an authority figure. A whole 7-10 years older, moved to Florida ages ago. Parents die in car crash in Lani's senior year. Have to move to kingdom, where her sister (Natalie?) can take her in. Extremely strapped for cash. Applied to various uh orphan funds for scholarships?
High school was a complete joke. Lani slacked off in every class except for, surprisingly, the sciences — she found a natural aptitude with them, but struggled hardcore with English, history, and basically anything essay-based. She likes reading books just fine, but not analysing them. A native English speaker, but shoddy grammar thanks to, o halo, SO MUCH PIDGIN. Also text speak, which hasn't helped today's youth much. She settled into the rogue's gallery of mildly eccentric outsiders and loners. Her spirited personality slowly started setting her apart from her fellow children; she wasn't grim and morbid. On the contrary, Lani was bright and full of life and direct with the approach, which might be what unnerved the others — where was her emo wangst? Where was her? Instead, she tried too hard to fit in, which just set the others further apart.
So she adjusted. Still struggling with grief. Reminders and backwash hits her sometimes. Has made her harder to deal with, harder for her sister to connect with. They're close — they're all each other has — but the Natalie having to play mom is driving a wedge through their relationship. Lani gets the 'freedom' to act out, while Natalie's stuck with being the stuffy responsible one. She's struggling just as hard.
